Always be prepared when it comes to weather conditions in The Smoky Mountain Region. Be sure to dress in layers to remain comfortable regardless of changing temperatures. Take advantage of the warmer days and go for a stroll. Cades Cove is a good place for a hike, but
just remember that the higher the elevation, the colder the temperature. Bring both long- and short-sleeved clothes to accommodate whatever weather you may be faced with during
your visit. Don’t forget that it gets dark early in the mountains, so plan your hike with that in mind.
Part of the thrill of visiting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the streams and waterfalls. Be careful around the water because moss on logs and boulders can make for very slippery footing. Never drink the water. It may contain natural parasites and impurities that can cause sickness. Swimming is dangerous because of submerged rocks, logs, and debris.
Driving in the mountains can be dangerous if drivers are not used to it. Be cautious of tight curves, steep inclines and narrow drop-offs. The best way to stay safe in the mountains is to remember a couple of simple rules. First, drive slowly. Take curves slowly to avoid skidding off the road. Second, avoid driving when the weather is bad. Light rain and black ice can make the road very slippery. Also, remember to make sure everyone in your vehicle is wearing a seatbelt.
Leave driving behind and, for 25¢ to $2, enjoy the Gatlinburg Trolley System. Experience the sights and sounds in comfort, reminiscent of turn-of-the-century transportation. The Gatlinburg Trolley system has six different routes depending on location and over 100 stops, some with sheltered waiting areas. Look for the street signs with a small trolley.
